Cold temperatures may cause icy surfaces on roads, pavements and outdoor areas.

Avoid slips and falls in icy conditions

Slips and falls in icy conditions are common, but there are steps you can take to reduce the risk of injury. If you need to go out when it is icy, follow the guidance below.

Tips for avoiding slips and falls if you have to go out in icy conditions:

• Think about the safest route to your destination and allow extra time to get there

• Avoid rushing or taking shortcuts where snow or ice has not been fully cleared

• Choose suitable footwear – flat shoes or boots with rubber soles provide better grip than leather-soled or high-heeled shoes

• Use handrails wherever possible

• Take small, careful steps to keep your centre of balance underneath you

• Avoid carrying heavy shopping bags, especially when using steps

• Walk slowly and never run on icy ground

• Keep both hands free for balance rather than in your pockets

• Stay aware of your surroundings – some areas remain icy for longer, especially those that do not get sunlight

• Take extra care when getting into and out of vehicles, and hold onto the vehicle for support

• Keep paths clear of debris, water, ice and snow where possible

• Use floor mats when entering buildings to remove moisture from your shoes and help prevent slippery surfaces for yourself and others

Taking simple precautions can make a significant difference in reducing the risk of slips and falls during icy weather.
